Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), Berlin

For the Department of Fish Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture of IGB in Berlin-Friedrichshagen at Lake Müggelsee we are inviting applications for the position of IT application developer or technical data analyst for an immediate start.

We conduct research in fish ecology and evolution and share scientific knowledge with practioners and the public in addition to the scientific community. Our projects involve observations and experiments in the laboratory, lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. We collaborate with colleagues across IGB in newly established Competence and Technology Centers (CTPs). IGB is the largest German research center dedicated entirely to inland waters and located in Berlin-Friedrichshagen on Lake Müggelsee. The institute is part of the Leibniz Association and receives core funding from Germany’s government and the federal states.

Your tasks

• Development, maintenance, and optimization of fish detection technologies based on ultrasound and video/camera systems in lab and field settings
• Integration of detection data with other spatial data
• Development of error correction algorithms
• Establishment and maintenance of database systems for archiving spatial data
• Development of AI-assisted image analysis and maintenance of database systems for data from various imaging devices, including FlowCams for the analysis of phyto- and zooplankton
• Data analysis, processing, and visualization for presentation, publications, and public relations

Your profile

• University degree in computer science, an appropriate field of engineering such as electrical engineering, biomathematics, operations research, or equivalent
• Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., C++, Python, C Sharp)
• Knowledge of database management (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL)
• Fluency in both written and spoken English
• Independent, structured, and deadline-oriented work approach
• Ability to work in a team
• Excellent communication skills
• Driver's license and willingness to engage in fieldwork

Advantageous are:

• Experience with the processing of spatial data (e.g., GIS) and statistical software applications (e.g., R, Matlab)
• Experience with biotelemetric applications on fish or animals in the wild
• Experience with image analyses

You will be paid according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund) and benefit from flexible working hours, a 39-hour work week, 30 days of vacation, a company pension scheme and a subsidy for public transportation. The contract is initially limited to two years with the option of permanent employment. The salary class will be based on qualifications and assigned duties, up to pay grade of EG 11.
